Should I start with a size chart or a fit quiz?¶
Guide type: Explanation Difficulty: Beginner Applies to: Size charts and fit quizzes
SmartSize offers two ways to help shoppers find the right size: size charts and fit quizzes. Both appear on your product pages through a SmartSize button, but they work differently and suit different stores.
If you are new to SmartSize, start with a size chart. It is faster to set up and works for almost every product. Add fit quizzes later when you want to give shoppers a more personalized recommendation.
What a size chart does¶
A size chart is a table of measurements that shoppers can browse and compare against their own body measurements. When a shopper clicks the Size Chart button on a product page, a popup opens with the chart for that product.
Size charts work well when:
- you sell standard apparel, shoes, accessories, or home goods
- your products have consistent sizing across variants
- you want shoppers to self-serve without answering questions
- you need a fast setup with minimal maintenance
SmartSize provides templates for common garment types and audiences, so you can create a chart in minutes. You can customize the measurements, add tabs for different size systems, and translate the content for international shoppers.
What a fit quiz does¶
A fit quiz asks shoppers a few questions about their body measurements and recommends the best size based on how your products are cut. When a shopper clicks the Find my size button, the quiz opens in a popup and guides them through the questions.
Fit quizzes work well when:
- you sell products where fit varies by brand or style
- your customers frequently ask "What size should I buy?"
- you want to reduce returns from size mismatches
- you are on a Pro plan and want advanced personalization
Fit quizzes take more time to set up because you need to enter or import a size table that maps body measurements to product sizes. You also need to connect the quiz to the right products through product display rules.
Key differences¶
| Size chart | Fit quiz | |
|---|---|---|
| Shopper effort | Reads a table | Answers 3–5 questions |
| Setup time | Minutes | Longer; needs a size table |
| Recommendation | Self-guided | Algorithm-driven |
| Plan requirement | All plans | Pro plan only |
| Best for | Standard sizing | Complex or variable fit |
Start with a size chart¶
Every SmartSize merchant should start with at least one size chart. It gives shoppers immediate value with the least setup effort.
After your first size chart is live, you can:
- create more charts for other product categories
- customize the popup design to match your store brand
- add international size conversions for global shoppers
Add a fit quiz when you are ready¶
Move to fit quizzes when you have a product line where standard charts are not enough. A common pattern is to use both: a size chart for straightforward products and a fit quiz for products where fit is critical, such as tailored dresses or specialized athletic wear.
On a Pro plan, you can create a fit quiz for any product that already has a size chart. The quiz can reference the same measurements while adding a layer of personalized recommendation.
Using both together¶
You do not have to choose just one. Many merchants use size charts for their full catalog and fit quizzes for a subset of products where returns are highest. SmartSize product display rules let you decide which button appears on which product page, so you can mix and match without confusion.
