Translations show old or missing text¶
Guide type: Troubleshooting guide Difficulty: Beginner Applies to: Translations and localization
Use this guide when a translated size chart, button label, or fit quiz shows outdated text, missing strings, or a mix of languages.
Symptoms¶
You may see one of these symptoms:
- the storefront shows the original English text instead of the translation
- some parts of a size chart are translated and others are not
- a button label reverted to the default text after you edited it
- the fit quiz shows questions in one language and results in another
- shoppers report seeing mixed languages on the same page
Quick checks¶
1. Confirm the storefront language¶
SmartSize translations only appear when the shopper views the storefront in the translated language.
Open your storefront and switch the language selector to the language you translated. If your store does not have a language selector, add one in Shopify or check the URL for a language prefix such as /de or /fr.
2. Check that translations were saved¶
For size chart content, open the chart in SmartSize and review the translation panel. Confirm that each field has text in the target language and that you clicked Save.
For button labels, open Shopify Translate & Adapt and confirm the SmartSize app embed strings are translated.
3. Check that the original content has not changed¶
If you edited the size chart after translating it, the new content may not have a translation yet.
Open the chart and compare the original text with the translated version. If the original changed, update the translation to match.
4. Refresh the storefront page¶
Browser and Shopify caching can delay translation updates.
Refresh the product page, open it in a private browser window, or wait a few minutes and try again.
Causes and fixes¶
Cause: content was edited after translation¶
What happens: You changed a size chart table, heading, or description after the translation was created. The translation still shows the old version.
Fix: Open the translation panel for the chart and update the translated text to match the new original content. Save the chart.
Cause: button labels not translated in Shopify¶
What happens: The size chart content is translated in SmartSize, but the Size Chart and Find my size buttons still show English because they are managed in Shopify Translate & Adapt.
Fix: Open Shopify Translate & Adapt, find the SmartSize app embed strings, and translate the button labels. Save and publish the translation.
For detailed steps, see Translate SmartSize button labels.
Cause: fit quiz language not supported¶
What happens: The fit quiz content is translated and maintained by SmartSize, but the shopper's language is not yet supported for fit quizzes.
Fix: Check the list of supported fit quiz languages. If the language is not supported, the quiz will fall back to English.
For the list, see Fit quiz supported languages.
Cause: storefront cache¶
What happens: The translation was saved correctly, but the storefront is showing a cached version.
Fix: Refresh the page, clear the browser cache, or test in a private window. Shopify may also cache translations for a few minutes after publishing.
Check the result¶
After applying a fix:
- Save all changes in SmartSize and Shopify.
- Open the storefront in the translated language.
- Refresh the page.
- Confirm that:
- the button labels appear in the translated language
- the size chart content matches the translation
- the fit quiz questions and results are in the correct language
- Test on both desktop and mobile.
If it still does not work¶
Contact SmartSize support and include:
- the storefront URL where the translation is wrong
- the language that should appear
- what text is showing instead
- a screenshot of the translation panel in SmartSize or Shopify Translate & Adapt
This helps support check whether the issue is in the translation data, language settings, or caching.
