Translate size chart content

Guide type: Task guide
Difficulty: Intermediate
Applies to: Size charts

Use size chart translations when you want shoppers to see size chart tables, headings, notes, and other chart content in their storefront language.

Size chart translations are different from fit quiz translations. Merchants control size chart content and translations in SmartSize. Fit quiz questions, quiz results, and recommendation text are already translated and maintained centrally by SmartSize.

What this article covers

This article covers translating size chart content, such as:

  • size chart titles
  • table headings
  • size names
  • measurement labels
  • text blocks
  • recommendation blocks
  • other content inside a size chart

It does not cover translating the Size Chart or Find my size button labels. It also does not cover fit quiz questions or result text, which are translated and maintained by SmartSize. To translate storefront button labels, use Translate SmartSize button labels.

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • at least one size chart in SmartSize
  • the storefront languages you want to support configured in Shopify
  • size chart translations available on your SmartSize plan
  • the source size chart content reviewed in your main language

Start with one language and one size chart. After you understand the workflow, you can translate more charts and languages.

Activate size chart translations

1. Open Global settings

In SmartSize, go to Global settings.

Open Size chart settings, then go to Translations.

2. Turn on size chart translations

In the Translations section, turn on Activate size chart translations.

This enables the size chart translation workflow for your store.

After activation, SmartSize shows the available storefront languages and the translation status for each language.

3. Check which languages need translations

Review the language list.

SmartSize shows which languages have missing size chart translations and how many charts still need translated content.

Use this list to decide which language to translate first.

After activation, choose how you want to create and maintain translations:

Use SmartSize AI to bulk-translate your size chart content into the storefront languages your store already supports. AI translation is the fastest way to translate many charts at once, and you can refine the results afterward.

Start AI translation for a language

Find the language you want to translate.

If translations are missing, click the action to translate the missing charts for that language. SmartSize queues a bulk translation job that processes every chart missing content in that language.

If no charts need translation for that language, the status shows as complete immediately.

Monitor translation progress

While the job runs, SmartSize shows a progress indicator for that language.

The indicator updates as charts are translated. Most jobs finish within a few minutes, depending on how many charts and blocks need translation.

You can leave the page and return later. The dashboard updates when you come back. If a job fails for a specific chart, the dashboard shows a failure count. Failed charts can be retried after the current job completes.

Review completed translations

When the job finishes, the language shows a translated or completed status.

Open a size chart that was translated and switch to the target language to review the content. Check headings, table labels, size names, callout text, and any recommendation blocks for accuracy.

AI translation is a fast starting point, but it may not be perfect for specialized terms, brand names, or regional sizing vocabulary. Always review before publishing.

Refine translations that need correction

If you spot an error in a translated chart, you have two options:

  • Edit the translation manually in the size chart editor. Open the chart, switch to the target language, and edit the block directly.
  • Run another AI sync for that language if the primary chart content has changed since the last translation.

For manual edits, see the Edit manually tab in this article.

Manually edit size chart translations when you want full control over wording, or when AI translation needs correction for brand terms, regional vocabulary, or tone. Manual edits are saved per language and are protected from automatic AI overwrite.

Open a size chart and switch language

In SmartSize, go to Size charts and open the chart you want to translate.

The editor opens in your chart's primary language by default. Look for the language selector in the editor header and choose the language you want to edit.

The editor reloads the chart content in that language. If the chart has never been translated into this language, you see a template pre-translation as a starting point.

Edit text blocks

Click the text block you want to change.

Edit the content directly in the block settings panel. You can change headings, paragraphs, callout text, and any other visible text.

Keep the meaning close to the primary language version so shoppers in different languages get the same guidance.

Edit table headings

Click a table block to open its settings.

Edit the column labels in the target language. For example, change Chest to the localized measurement name.

Table cell values such as numeric sizes or measurements usually stay the same across languages. Translate only the column headers and size labels that shoppers read.

Save your changes

Click Save in the editor.

SmartSize stores your manual edits for that language. The blocks you touched are marked as manual in the translation tracking system. This tells SmartSize that you intentionally edited these blocks, and future AI translation runs will skip them unless you choose to override manual edits.

Understanding block status

SmartSize tracks the state of every translated block:

  • Synced — the block was translated by AI and matches the primary content as of the last sync.
  • Manual — you edited this block by hand. AI will not overwrite it unless you choose to override manual edits during a sync.
  • Stale — the primary content changed after the last translation. The translation may be out of date.
  • Accepted — you reviewed a stale block and confirmed the existing translation is still correct.

For more on stale blocks and how to update them, see the Keep in sync tab in this article.

When you edit a size chart in your primary language, the translations for other languages can fall out of date. SmartSize flags these as stale so you know which blocks need attention and can choose how to update them.

Recognize stale blocks

Open a size chart that you recently edited in your primary language.

If you switch to a translated language, SmartSize highlights blocks that may be out of date. These blocks are marked as stale because the primary content changed after the last translation.

Stale blocks appear with a visual indicator in the editor block list and in the translation sync dialog.

Choose how to update

For each stale block, you have three options:

  • Sync with AI — re-translate the block using AI based on the current primary content.
  • Accept as-is — keep the existing translation. Use this when the primary edit was minor and did not change the meaning.
  • Edit manually — open the block and update the translation by hand.

You can also apply these actions in bulk for many blocks at once.

Sync stale blocks with AI

In the size chart editor, open the Sync with AI dialog.

SmartSize shows which languages have stale blocks and how many blocks need updating. Select the languages you want to sync.

Choose the sync scope:

  • Outdated only — sync blocks that are stale or have never been translated. This is the safest default.
  • All blocks — re-translate every block except those you edited manually. Use this when you want a fresh AI translation of the entire chart.

Click Translate to start the sync. SmartSize updates the selected blocks and marks them as synced.

If any of the selected blocks were previously edited manually, SmartSize warns you before overwriting them. You can choose to protect manual edits or override them.

Accept translations as-is

If the primary edit was small — for example, fixing a typo or updating a number — the existing translation may still be correct.

Select the stale blocks you want to keep, then choose Accept as-is. SmartSize marks these blocks as accepted, which means they are no longer flagged as stale. If the primary content changes again in the future, the block will become stale once more.

Edit manually instead

For blocks where AI might miss brand-specific terms or where tone matters, switch to the target language and edit the block directly.

After saving, the block is marked as manual. Manual blocks are protected from future AI syncs unless you explicitly override them.

For detailed manual editing steps, see the Edit manually tab in this article.

Check the result

After translating, editing, or syncing:

  1. Open a size chart in the target language and preview it.
  2. Open your storefront in the translated language.
  3. Go to a product that matches the size chart's product display rules.
  4. Open the size chart and confirm that the content appears in the target language.

Also check the button label. If the size chart content is translated but the button still appears in the original language, translate the Size Chart button label separately.

If translations do not appear

Check that:

  • Activate size chart translations is turned on in Global settings
  • the storefront language is configured in Shopify
  • you are viewing the storefront in the translated language
  • the size chart has translated content for that language
  • the product you are viewing matches the size chart product display rules
  • the size chart extension is active on the live theme

If the size chart button itself is not visible, see SmartSize button is missing from my product page.
